A metalworking machine is a metal-cutting machine that is used to process metals in order to produce parts that are different in size, shape, and quality.

In terms of functionality, metalworking machines can be specialized (they perform only a certain option) and multifunctional (they perform several production functions).

Types of metalworking machines

  • Lathes. This is an industrial equipment that is used to create and process workpieces made of metal, wood and other hard materials by turning. It is used for turning parts, threading, processing ends, drilling holes, etc. The working tool is a variety of cutters. Lathes are screw-cutting, carousel, frontal, revolving, automatic longitudinal turning, multi-spindle, turning and milling.
  • Milling machines. They are used for processing parts made of metal and other materials using a rotating milling cutter with a translational feed of the workpiece. There are vertical, horizontal and combined milling machines.
  • Grinding machines. Designed for abrasive treatment of metal surfaces. With their help, excessive roughness is reduced, and the surface is polished.
  • Drilling and boring machines. They are used for creating and processing various holes in parts, drilling holes, finishing internal cylindrical surfaces, boring, unfolding, cutting the ends of workpieces, cutting internal and external threads. Drilling and boring machines are divided into universal and specialized.

The principle of operation of drilling machines consists in the rotational and translational movement of the spindle along its axis, which is carried out by the cutting tool. In this case, the workpiece remains stationary.

The principle of operation of boring machines differs from drilling machines in that the feed is transmitted to the cutting tool or the workpiece itself.

  • Processing centers. These are multi-operation CNC machines for complex machining by means of various tools. They are used for a wide range of operations from roughing to finishing workpieces and various surfaces. High productivity is ensured by the absence of the need to move parts from one machine to another.
  • Laser machines. Designed for non-contact processing of various metals, for engraving and cutting metal products.
  • Gear-working machines. They are used for manufacturing, finishing and roughing the teeth of wheels, fitting the wheels, bringing the teeth to the desired size and rounding their ends.
  • Planing machines. They are used for processing various materials and surfaces by performing reciprocating actions with a cutting tool on a stationary workpiece.
  • Thread-working machines. Designed for the formation of threads on various workpieces by turning, milling, tapping, and vortex cutting.

Metalworking equipment is used in the aircraft industry, automotive industry, shipbuilding, instrument making and many other industries.
